I upcycled a round circle mirror centerpiece that I got for free into a framed flower power 70s wall mirror. I used some scrap wood for this craft and cut it into a circle to use around the mirror. Now it’s vintage wall art and it was a very budget friendly DIY.

Tip: You can watch a video of how I did the mirror makeover on my Instagram.

I found two huge rolls of vintage 1970s wallpaper at an antique shop for $10. You can buy your own vintage wallpaper on eBay or you can shop my line of vintage inspired wallpaper. I have flower power and wildflower options that you can see below.

Cut Wood to Size

Measure your mirror (Mine is 12 inches) and decide how much wood you want around the mirror to put wallpaper on. I wanted a 6 inch wide border around the mirror so I cut at 24 inch piece of round wood.

We used some scrap wood around the house and it was a really thin piece (About 1/4 inch) I would recommend using something thicker so you can screw in the wire for hanging it up. Maybe 1/2-1 inch thick wood. We drew a circle in the wood and cut it using a jigsaw.

Paint the Wood

OPTIONAL: You can paint the edge of the wood if you don’t want wood showing. I decided to use Kilz paint that I already had in the house on the edge.

Cutting out vintage wallpaper for projects

Cut the Wallpaper to Size

Cut your wallpaper or fabric by laying the wood circle on top of it. Use a pencil or fabric marker to draw the stencil out on the back. You’re going to cut a donut shape because you want to glue the mirror to the wood, not the wallpaper. Draw a rough circle in the middle and cut that out.

Don’t waste the inside donut hole piece! I actually used that small piece for my Vintage 70s 3 tier stand.

Mod Podge the Vintage Wallpaper

Use a paint brush to brush mod podge on the wood and the back of the wallpaper. Mod podge just where you’ll be laying the wallpaper down, leave the middle bare where the mirror will go.

I used clothespins around the edge of the wood to hold the wallpaper in place while I mod podged around it. Or you could also use books to weigh it down. Once you’ve glued it all down place books around the wallpaper overnight to set the mod podge.

Glue the Mirror

Place the mirror in the center of the wood and mark lightly with a pencil where the mirror should go to be center. Use E6000 glue to adhere the mirror to the wood. I put the glue on the back of the mirror and on the wood. Once I put the mirror in place I wiggled it around to get the glue all over the wood so it would hold better.

Put books down on top of it and wait 24 hours or follow the glue instructions.

How to hang a wood mirror

Hang Your Mirror

We used too thin of scrap wood so we had to add an extra piece so we could screw wire for hanging. Drill two pilot holes (Or use nails to make pilot holes) into the back of the wood. Put the screws in the pillow holes.

Use wire to hang wall art

Leave the screws up a bit so you can wrap wire around them. Make sure you wrap it around the screw tightly enough so the mirror is secure.

Hang the mirror on a wall and you’re good to go! I absolutely love this DIY and it’s a great way to use an otherwise ugly mirror. They aren’t hard to find at thrift shops so keep your eyes peeled so you can make your own mirror!
